| Winter Along the Housatonic: Photograph by JL Gardner. "Winter in the Berkshires doesn't always end on March 20th or 21st; sometimes it carries on like this past year when we had a late snowstorm in early April. I was out shoveling my driveway this one morning after a new snowfall when I looked up and saw the trees behind my house (more pictures from this day to follow!?!) with the snow clinging to the branches and a deep blue sky above and behind. It was a perfect moment to go out and snap some pictures before the sun and wind knocked the snow off the branches or, more clouds rolled in. So I got dug out then jumped in my truck and went for a ride. This spot along the west branch of the Housatonic River in west Pittsfield (off Hungerford Street) is a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, this day, the access to the river banks was mighty treacherous as I almost ended up in the river with my camera in hand, as I crept out on a small jetty to get this precious shot of the river looking up stream. What I love about these moments too is how quiet it always is after a fresh coating of snow; sound is absorbed by the snow to some extent I do believe. Plus, people are just a little behind schedule after a big snowstorm so the traffic is usually at a minimum in the early morning hours. Any ways, this is a favorite shot of mine and I think it captures perfectly the quiet, serene and spectacular beauty that the Berkshires offer even in the winter months (or April!)" |
