| Herd in the Shade: by Carl Hetherington. I encountered this herd on a hill behind the Clarke Art Museum in Williamstown, Massachusetts, one hot July day. The huge and beautiful tree was what first interested me, but when one of the cows looked up to see who I was, she added so much personality to an otherwise bucolic scene I had to paint it. The cool lavender colors that can be seen in the background are not due to artistic license but are the colors of the mountain that sits behind the hill on which the tree stands. Such beautiful background colors are a gift of the Berkshires which can be seen everywhere just by looking up. |
