| Greylock & Boats on Pontoosuc Lake: Photograph by JL Gardner. "Well, what can I say, this trumps the previous image of Pontoosuc Lake with the boats only because it has the majestic Mount Greylock posing in the background. Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts (at 3,491 feet above sea level); some claim it looks like a woman lying on her back and the dual peaks of the preserve being the reclined woman's breasts (the second, lower peak is actually Saddle Ball Mountain). And then there is the story that Greylock served as the inspiration for Hermann Melville's novel, 'Moby Dick' as the dual peaks as seen from his Arrowhead home looked like the great hump of a sperm whale as it crests in the water. Either way you look at it, on any crystal clear day in the Berkshires, Greylock can be seen from almost any where in the county. On this day, I was very greatful to see it and photgraph it with the calm quiet waters of Pontoosuc in the foreground on a virtually perfect Autumn day!" |
