Sage’s Ravine is a nearby jewel – a deeply shaded hemlock ravine with a series of small waterfalls — at the SW corner of Massachusetts. I saw this pristine little place on August 17, 2006 as I drove along a back road in Sheffield, MA, in the Schenob Brook watershed. It is a calcareous fen – a wet meadow with limy soil which is considered a rare natural community by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. A shrubby old field at the base of the Mount Washington ridge near the SW corner of Massachusetts. When I saw these two trees in the distance – A sugar maple and a white pine – I knew immediately that they would be the main subject of one of my landscape images.

This beautiful barn is a prominent feature of a farm located at the base of The Hopper – a spectacular bowl carved out of the Western flank of Mt. Greylock by the last glacier 12-15,000 years ago.

The Tully River is located in Royalston, a town in Western Mass. It is a quiet, slow-flowing stream with pristine water and little coves filled with lily pads. This little river gives a paddler the illusion of being in a remote wilderness – only an illusion, but a wonderful one.
