| Berkshire Winter: by Carl Hetherington. This was painted at dawn in deep winter. The ridge in the background leaves the valley in cold predawn twilight while the light from the sun still hidden behind the ridge just catches the tops of the tall trees on the hill in the foreground. The colors are caught at a particular instant and looks entirely different moments later as the sun rises and strikes the slopes, forests and fields. I can look straight out the back window of my home in Canaan, New York to see this scene but only in winter. At other times of the year it completely disappears behind the foliage of the nearest trees giving me an altogether different scene to paint. West Stockbridge, Massachusetts is nestled in a valley out of sight between the far blue ridge and the hill with the two light blue snow covered pastures in the middle ground. |
